“Whenever I’m indecisive in the studio, I try to imagine how a certain idea might work in a live situation, how it would “bloom beyond the studio monitors”. Something happens when you trick your mind into thinking there’s an audience in the studio with you – and I try to keep that inner conversation going, whenever I’m writing.
Live music is where the songs come alive. It’s where you can lure out all the little details of a composition – both emotionally and dynamically. Good songs can take on different shades, characteristics – sometimes even a new meaning, as you play them night after night.
That’s the magic of live music to me and I need that as a songwriter to provide real world context to the songs.
Live music makes it real.”
